Calling all Junior Quilters

National charity Canine Partners, who provides specially trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities, is appealing to young people to get quilting.  ‘Junior Quilters Challenge’ is looking for young quilters to make a quilted item, which demonstrates knowledge of the ‘colour wheel’, and once completed enter it into this unique competition.

The challenge is open to all young quilters up to the age of 16, and the first prize is a Janome Jem Platinum 760 sewing machine.  The closing date for all entries is 1st June 2011.  All entries will be on display from the 17th to the 26th June 2011 at Beacon Dental Care, Malvern.

‘Junior Quilters Challenge’ is part of the bigger fundraising campaign ‘Jenson’s Colour Wheel Appeal’, the brainchild of Stella Hewitt.  Stella is a wheelchair user and has been with her canine partner Jenson for 17 months.

The ‘Colour Wheel Appeal’ raises funds through donations and from Stella’s illustrated talks with Jenson at her side.  Stella has set herself the target of raising £10,000 to put towards the cost of providing a fully trained canine partner to another disabled person who could benefit from the practical and emotional support these special dogs can provide.

Stella is a keen quilter, and discovered her love of this craft following the car accident 12 years ago that left her badly injured.  Stella explains, “Before the crash that so drastically changed my life I loved the challenge of getting up mountains.  Now patchwork and quilting have become my new mountain and it’s equally challenging in a different way, and so much fun!  I want to do all I can to encourage young people to take up the needle and thread and have a go” Stella continues, “The Junior Quilt Challenge is not looking for masterpieces! We just want you to have a go.  You can support the Colour Wheel Appeal, have fun and learn a new skill.   Someone has kindly sponsored my canine partner Jenson.  He has given me back my life and makes me smile every day.  You can help to give that life changing chance to someone else with a disability just by having a go at the challenge.”
