You Are Here : Local man becomes Swanland’s first Canine Partners puppy parent
Mike welcomed golden retriever cross poodle Carter to the village in May and is helping look after him during his training to become a fully-fledged canine partner.
Mike lives in Swanland with his wife Joan and daughter Shona who has cerebral palsy. He retired from printing this year and has been spending his time gardening, cooking and playing golf but mostly training 20-week-old Carter.
As part of his role as a puppy parent, Mike must offer Carter a supportive family home and socialise him into the local community. He also attends weekly puppy training classes at Kingston Veterinary Practice, Beverley Road in Hull, with other volunteer puppy parents from the local area. Mike will have Carter until he is around 14 months old when he will then return to the training centre in West Sussex to embark on his advanced taskwork training and be matched to a person with disabilities.
“Carter is a lovely laid back and gentle dog with a superb temperament. Every day is different and he is a joy to work with,” says Mike. “He can already carry out basic commands such as sit, down, stand, touch, get it, give it, stay, wait, get dressed and come when called. I enjoy being a puppy parent as I am meeting and speaking to people I might not have previously spoken to, I have also lost ten pounds since having Carter! I feel great pride when out walking and he obeys a command we have recently been working on and amusement when watching his puppy antics. I know he will have to leave us when it is time for advanced training, but he will be going on to do such valuable work for a person with disabilities. In the meantime I shall enjoy all our time together, especially at night when he falls asleep with his head resting on my feet!”
