Jemima Norman from Newmarket has raised over £3500 for Canine Partners, who provides specially trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities, by completing the London Marathon in April.
Jemima (35) took part in the London Marathon in 1996 and 2000, but this year she beat her personal best by finishing in 3hrs and 48 minutes. She was inspired to raise funds for Canine Partners after coming into contact with these amazing dogs through charity involvement from family members and friends.
Jemima says, “I am a big fan of the work of Canine Partners in changing the lives of people with disabilities. The atmosphere on the day was incredible and encouraged me to run like the wind! I am delighted to have raised this amount of money and know it will be put to the best possible use in training more dogs to carry out tasks such as picking up dropped items, opening doors and much more.”
Money raised by taking part in challenges such as marathons will allow Canine Partners to continue to help people such as Janet Pearsons from Woodbridge in Suffolk. She says of her canine partner Nikita: “My life before Nikita provided no relief from the daily struggles of coping with disability. Now Nikita is my reason to get up in the mornings as she is completely reliant on me for her food, exercise and well being. In turn she gives me wonderful support, companionship and provides a very welcome distraction from being in a wheelchair. An added bonus is she makes me laugh with her funny little ways. Nikita's gentle nature, patience, sensitivity and wish to help me in every way she can gives me new purpose to my life. In a way human helpers can never do, she cares for me in a non-judgemental way helping to maintain my independence and dignity.”
Canine Partners has charity places available for the London 10K run on 10 July and Great South Run on 30 October, so if you would like to take up the challenge please call Jill Green on 01730 716014.
