Swanmore bluebell walk raises £2200 for Canine Partners

A bluebell walk that took place on Saturday 7 May at the Holywell Estate near Swanmore has raised £2200 for Canine Partners, a charity that provides highly trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities.  Over 260 walkers attended, along with three local people with disabilities and their canine partners.

The walk took place through the Holywell Estate, courtesy of Lady Clarendon.  There were two separate walks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, each covering a distance of 2-3 miles.  Although a little windy, the weather stayed warm and dry.  Walkers were rewarded by a BBQ run by the Meon Valley Lions Club, as well as a merchandise stall and plant sale.

Walk organiser Jill Green comments, “We had a fantastic turn out at this event, making it our biggest bluebell walk to date throughout the country.  We were delighted by the support we had from local residents as well as volunteers, puppy parents and the fundraising team.  Raising this amount of money really helps us to continue to train dogs to change the lives of people with disabilities.”

One of the partnerships that attended was David Filmer who has osteogenesis imperfecta and his canine partner Zack from Fareham. “Zack has made so much difference to my life. The need to give Zack regular exercise means that I’m getting out of the house much more. I’m losing weight and meeting lots of new people too, which is helping to break the depressive cycle of hiding away from society.  He makes it easier for me to cope at home and at work without help from other people. He’s able to open doors when I might struggle, he picks things up that I drop or can’t reach, and helps drags the laundry basket out to the washing line for me - it’s great to do things myself!”

Canine Partners is always looking for volunteers, fundraisers and puppy parents from the local community, for further information please visit www.caninepartners.org.uk.
